DePaul big man, Mac Koshwal will likely be out for 3-4 weeks with a left foot injury that he suffered in a loss to Tennessee in the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.  Coach Jerry Wainwright originally dismissed the reports but it has become clear that the 255 lbs, 6’11” center will not be available for at least 4 weeks.  Koshwal is the second leading scorer for DePaul with15.0 points per game and a monster 13.0 rebounds per game in the early going.  Without Koshwal, who is an NBA prospect, the Blue Demons lack size and will have to work hard to pick up the slack.  The Blue Demons have some difficult games coming up as they play Vandy and Mississippi State.  Providence plays DePaul on January 14, which is after the 4 week mark.

This is a big blow for the Blue Demons.  Koshwal is a big time player. At 4-1 they are off to a good start, but really have not been impressive in their wins.  Without Koshwal it will be difficult for the Blue Demons to keep pace.  In their one game without him, they narrowly got past Detroit in OT.  Koshwal is NBA material, and when you lose somebody like that from your team it is hard to recover.  Because of the annual dpth of the BIG EAST, OCC games had particular importance to the Blue Demons.  It was important for them to get some good OCC wins heading into BIG EAST play, but that looks like it will be difficult now.  On the bright side Koswhal will be back for the bulk of the BIG EAST season, likely only missing 1 or two games if his foot heals as expected.

Unfortunately for Friar fans, there is a decent chance that Koshwal’s first game back will be against PC.  That said over a month on the bench with limited conditioning activity changes a player, so maybe he will have some cobwebs, but he is a good player and by time DePaul plays the Friars this is not expected to be a major issue.  In the mean time, however, we don’t expect DePaul to be doing too much without him so look for them to drop a spot in the BIG EAST Power Rankings squeezing the Friars out of the #15 spot.

We wish Mac Koshwal a healthy recovery.
