Preview: PC will take on the Bryant University Bulldogs in the first game of their season.  Bryant is picked to finish 11th in the 12 team NEC.  Bryant enters their second year as D-1 program much changed from last year.  Like PC, Bryant was heavy on seniors, so this years team will have a very different look.  That said Bryant will still look to three seniors to lead the way.  Cecil Gresham was the Bryant’s leadings scorer last season at 13.4 ppg, connecting on 57 3-pointers. Nick Pontes gives the team a strong presence in the interior, while Chris Birrell handles the point. Birrell dished out a team-best 3.5 assists per game a season ago.  Additionally the Bulldogs will get to use UMass transfer Papa Lo.  The 6’9″ center is a good shot blocker and gives Bryant the inside presence they so badly need.  Bryant won their lone exhibition game this season.

Lowdown:  PC cannot have another first game let down like last year.  Bryant is a very beatable team, but, like all teams, needs to be treated with respect.  Three games in three days is never easy, but getting things started the right way will help.  PC will should be able to handle Bryant in the frontcourt as well as the backcourt.  We are looking for another big game from Greedy Peterson.  It is important he establishes himself down low and owns the boards.  We also would like to see the freshman take an active role in this game.  It is important, especially in these first few games for the new players on the team to get some experience and gain confidence.  Otherwise, we are just glad that the season is here and we hope to get a win under our belts.

GO PC!

I don’t think its fair to list Bryant as rival. Yes they are right near PC, but to be a rival there needs to be a little history, some back and forth. We played one game against them last year and won easily. Let’s make the term rival still mean somethind, not just tossing it around

Friars, thanks for the comment, and for protecting the integrity of PC’s rivals or lack there of. We are aware of the brief history PC and Bryant share, but we will still be referring to them as RIvals. We use RIval to indicate a Rhode Island rival. We will also be including Brown and URI in this category. We understand that Bryant is not a historic rival, and we believe most people who read this blog already know that Bryant is not a rival in the sense that URI, BC, or UConn; however, we were attempting to draw out the in-state rivalries of Rhode Island. We do not think that we were unfair with the use of RIval, but apologize to PC fans who took offense from it, and we can promise we were not just “tossing around” the term. In the future we will continue to use the term for the four competing D-1 teams in Rhode Island, just know the context in which we are using it.
