The Friars basketball season gets under way to day with an exhibition against the Merrimack College Warriors.  Merrimack is a D-2 school who plays out of the Northeast-10 Conference where they are picked to finish first.  They are the #15 D-2 team in the country and the best and New England.  Last year the Warriors had a 21-9 record and participated in the D-2 NCAA Tournament.  This years team is led by senior captain, and preseason All-American  Darren Duncan.  The 5’10” guard is a gamer and a great scorer for his size.  Duncan is complemented 6’2″ Sophomore guard Darin Mency.  Like PC, Merrimack is short on height.  They have one 6’11” player, but after that there isn’t much.  Of course it is only an exhibition, but there should be no problems with this Merimack team.  As for PC, this is the first time a lot of new players will get to suit up and take it to the court against another team on the college level.  The team is young and inexperienced, but is full of raw talent that should be plenty to put away Merrimack.

The story of today is that Alumni Hall has finally reopened its doors for todays exhibition.  Not since PC took on the Russian National team in back in 1978 has their been a game on campus.  Back than Alumni Hall was one of the great home court advantages in the country, who had a 178-29 (.860) record and five unbeaten home seasons.  Today the Friars look to reignite some old tradition and history, as well as add some excitement to an exhibition game.  For more on Alumni Hall check out the article written by Kevin McNamara in the ProJo.

imagesWe figured we would go with the throwback PC logo considering that the game is being played in Alumni Hall.  We aren’t going to give any keys to victory for an exhibition game, but we will say what we would like to see today.  We would love to see the Friars come out with the enthusiasm that past Friar teams have been unable to achieve in the early goings of the season.  Hopefully, a bunch of new players excited to play in a college game for the first time, and the reopening of Alumni Hall for the afternoon will help with that.  This is a good game to see what the new players can contribute.  We are looking to see a crisp game, because so often exhibition games can get very sloppy.  A high shooting percentage, minimal turnovers, and tight defense is what we are looking for PC to give is today.  Otherwise there is not much else to say.  We will be at the game, and try and get a picture or two if we can.  Look for post game thoughts tonight or tomorrow.

MATCH-UP TO WATCH:  Sharaud Curry vs. Darren Duncan.  The two guards are both experienced scoring guards and leaders of their team.  They are both listed at 5’10” so there is no height advantage, but the edge certainly goes to Sharaud.  Years of experience in the Big East, and a capable scoring threat will overwhelm Darren Duncan… for the time that Sharaud is actually in the game.
